Report on ‘National Science Day 2026’ Program

Dimapur Government College, 28th February 2026:

Dimapur Government College observed the first National Science Day organised by the first batch of Science Club members and funded by IQAC on 28th February 2026 at 10:00 AM in the Seminar Hall, DGC.

Dr. Temjennaro Jamir, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Department acted as the chairperson. She warmly welcomed everyone present and highlighted the importance of celebrating science in everyday life. The event began with an opening prayer led by Mr. Inika P. Chophy from B.Sc. 2nd semester of Mathematics department.

In a short address, the Principal spoke about the significance of National Science Day and the role of science in shaping society. He also emphasized the introduction of botany and zoology departments in the college and remarked that the first batch of science faculty and students are creating history in the college.

The Principal also spoke about the importance of science. He stressed that science and technology are crucial pillars for national transformation, especially in achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047. He encouraged students to actively participate in scientific learning and contribute towards solving real world problems. Environmental concerns and the sustainable use of natural resources were also highlighted. He spoke on coal mining and its impact on people and the environment in few places in the state. Students were encouraged to understand such issues and work towards practical solutions. He further noted that while problems are increasing, the number of problem solvers is declining, especially in regions like Nagaland. Therefore, science students were urged to take responsibility, work hard, and contribute meaningfully to society and their communities.

The programme included a prize distribution to the winners of poster competition which was held on 27th February 2026.

The programme was then followed by a theme speech on “Women in science: catalysing Viksit Bharat” was delivered by resource person Er. Modozho Mathew Dukru, Assistant Professor of Computer Science department. The session highlighted the vital role of women in shaping India’s scientific future and their contribution towards building a developed nation by 2047. The resource person emphasized that as India moves towards the vision of Viksit Bharat, it is essential to ensure equal participation of women in science and technology. Women bring innovation, creativity, and resilience to scientific progress, thereby strengthening the foundation of national development. The speaker acknowledged the contributions of pioneering women scientists such as Kalpana Chawla, whose achievements continue to inspire young minds. Special reference was made to the growing participation of women in scientific initiatives and national missions, demonstrating how their involvement is transforming traditionally male-dominated fields.

The resource person further stressed that:

  1. Science and technology are key pillars for India’s transformation by 2047.
  2. Women’s active participation is necessary for inclusive growth.
  3. Bridging gender gaps in education and scientific opportunities is crucial, especially in rural areas.

In the context of Nagaland, he highlighted that although the state is geographically small, its potential is immense. Women in Nagaland are contributing significantly within their communities, and with proper support systems such as quality science education, scholarships, skill development programs, and mentorship networks, they can play a transformative role in sectors like sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, healthcare, renewable energy, and digital innovation. The speaker also called upon teachers, institutions, communities, and young students especially male counterparts to support and encourage girls to pursue careers in science. The session concluded with a strong message that empowering women in science is not just about equality but about nation-building. Every challenge faced by women scientists builds resilience, and every achievement brings India one step closer to becoming a developed nation. The speech served both as a celebration of women’s contributions and a pledge to foster a more inclusive scientific ecosystem for the future.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. H. Atoholi Sema, Assistant Professor of Chemistry department and Convener, Science Club, DGC.
