Awareness Programme on “Protection of Women in India with Special Reference to Nagaland” on 07.03.2020

An awareness programme on “Protection of Women in India with Special Reference to Nagaland” was held today at the college auditorium, which was organized by IQAC and Internal Committee for Protection of Women, Dimapur Govt. College.

The programme was held under the directive of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to all the educational institutions to observe the programme on the theme, “Protection of Women.”

Giving the welcome address, the Principal of the college Ms. Alemla Imsong stressed on the significance and relevance of the day and also the need for protection of women in India with reference to Nagaland. While talking about the need for gender equality, she also highlighted, in utmost celebration of the names of various women around the world so also Naga women who are leaders and achievers and have excelled in their own fields, and who holds the banner of women’s empowerment and liberation. She concluded by emphasizing on the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day – “An equal world is an enabled world.”

The speaker for the day was Ms. Kekhriele-ü Mezhu, Advocate, who focused on the aspect of dignity of women, and the various forms of injustices meted out to women today. Her talk thus centered on awareness of the basic Legal rights of women which would enable women to protect themselves which included rights like free legal aid, right to privacy, right to the timing of arrest, right to call the police station and call the police home, right to confidentiality, right towards crime and medical examination, and the right to have a sexual harassment committee at workplace. She also strongly highlighted the aspect of domestic violence which included economic, virtual, physical and emotional harassment. Finally, stressing on the importance of gender equality she remarked that it is an important yardstick for the achievement of happiness for all.

The programme was chaired by Dr. Vinyuhu Lhongu, Asstt. Prof., dept. of Economics and the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Hare Krushna Parhi, Asstt. Prof., dept. of Education.
