India Meteorological Department Celebrated World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Day at Dimapur Government College
India Meteorological Department (IMD) commemorated World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Day on 24th March, 2025 at Dimapur Government College (DGC) with a theme “Closing the Early Warning Gap Together”. The program was organized by Meteorological Centre (MC) Kohima in collaboration with Green Campus Committee, DGC. Mr. Nalnish Kumar Chaudhary, Scientist D and Head, MC, Kohima delivered a talk on the designated theme. He highlighted the role of WMO and IMD towards the global and national effort to enhance space and time accuracy of weather forecasting coupled with early severe weather warning, if any. He further dwelled upon the history of IMD and its role as a service provider to the various agencies for overall betterment of the society.
Mr. Nalnish Kumar Chaudhary elaborated on the current services provided by MC, Kohima namely, (i) Three hours nowcasting (ii) Seven day district wise rain forecast (iii) Five days district wise severe weather warning (iv) Impact based forecast (v) Aviation related services at Dimapur airport (vi) Agromet service (vii) City forecast etc. He further discussed about future plans of MC, Kohima such as (i) to provide block level rain forecasting and weather warning. (ii) to increase observational network to various districts of Nagaland and (iii) to install X-band Doppler Weather Radar at Dimapur Govt College.
He affirmed that these increased observational facilities will enhance forecasting and nowcasting capability of the organization over Nagaland. He further emphasized that the generated data can be utilized by the academic community and policy makers of the state. During the program, video clips of the activities of WMO, IMD and MC Kohima were screened. The program culminated with demonstration of instruments to measure various atmospheric parameters.
