Annual Action Plan (June 2023- May 2024)

Action taken report:

2^nd September, 2023: English Students Club, Dimapur Government College organized “Battle of Wits” under the theme, ‘Rediscover, Rekindle and Revive English through Communication’. A debate competition on the topic, “English Literature is easier than any other discipline” was conducted wherein Lhaineichoi, B.A. 3^rd Semester and Atino Yeptho, B.A. 5^th Semester of team against the motion bagged the first position. Livika Sumi, B.A. 3^rd Semester won the title of the best debater. In Extempore Speech Limatoshi Longchar, B.A. 1^st Semester, Loiyihingle Zeliang, B.A. 3^rd Semester and Livika Sumi, B.A. 3^rd Semester won the first, second and third position respectively.

9^th February, 2024: Various Literary competitions were organized during the Harbinger Fest. Spoken Word Poetry with the theme ‘Whispers of the heart’, Character Monologue and debate with the topic, ‘Should there be limitations on the development of Artificial Intelligence?’ conducted which saw active participation from many students.

16^th March, 2024: An inter-departmental seminar was conducted by the department. The first paper was “Homeland Reveries: Exploring the Attachments to Home and Nature in the Works of Three Northeast Indian Writers”, presented by Shiem L. and Washitemjen, B.A., English Honours, 6^th Semester students. The second paper titled “Representation of Oral Tradition in Children’s Literature through the Amalgamation of Visual Graphics and Story-telling with Special Reference to Easterine Kire’s The Log-Drummer Boy” was presented by N. Mongyung Phom, Assistant Professor, Department of English.

20th April, 2024: The Graduating Students Interactive Programme (GSIP) cum Annual Department Farewell of the Department of English, Dimapur Government College was organized at the college auditorium. The release of the English Students’ Club Logo with the motto, “Ink Ideate Iterate” was also held in the same programme.

The University on 22^nd April, 2024 approved four new courses designed by the department, to be taught from the current academic session. The names of the courses are:

Introduction to Poetry in English for 1^st Semester
Introduction to Drama in English for 2^nd semester
Introduction to Fiction in English for 3^rd Semester

SEC

i) Etiquette and Social Graces for 1^st Semester

VAC

i) Basics of Mentoring for 2^nd semester

The department contributes annually to the Student Welfare Fund of the college. It has its own Student Welfare Fund too where students from financially challenged families are identified and given monthly stipend. In the current academic session three (3) students from the department are sponsored under the Fund. These students are financially supported till the completion of their studies in the college. Monitory help was given to the following students for various reasons:
i) Osangrenla, B.A. 1^st semester – demise of father on 30^th August, 2023
ii) Sophia Surhoni Jungi, B.A. 5^th semester – demise of mother on 30^th November, 2023
iii) Kungdin Nring, B.A. 6^th semester – demise of mother on 20^th January, 2024
iv) Sungtibenla (family), B.A. 2^nd semester – on her demise on 18^th February, 2024
v) Naomi M. Yeptho, B.A. 2^nd semester – demise of father on 20^th February, 2024
vi) Imliwapang Jamir, B.A. 4^th semester – fire incident at their house on 27^th April, 2024
The above mentioned funds and monitory aids were sponsored by the faculty of the department.

Mentoring Report

5^th August, 2023: Met with the 3^rd and 5^th Semester mentees and discussed their previous semester’s University exams performance and results. Met the 1^st Semester students separately as it was their first mentoring session. They were informed of the values of mentoring and also of the mentor-mentee relationship. The new mentees were also acquainted with the rules of the college and the different student centric benefits available in the college and how to avail them.

2^nd September, 2023: The mentees progress thus far and also their attendance of the previous month was discussed. The erring students especially those with very low attendance were impressed to not be negligent. The issues that were brought forward by the mentees were discussed and were provided with the best possible solution.

7^th October, 2023: Discussion was held on how they were studying as the University exam would be conducted in the coming month. Mentees were encouraged to get their exam related works like the payment of the exam fee, done at the earliest and also to get serious with their preparation for the exam.

4^th November, 2023: With the End Semester Exam right at the door-step the mentees were helped with their last minute queries. They were also apprised of the rules of the exam. The 1^st Semester mentees who would be sitting for their first University exam were specifically educated on how to enter the details in the scripts.

3^rd February, 2024: Met and discussed with the mentees of what were expected of them as students in the new academic session. Evaluation of their previous semester’s University exams performance and results were done.

2^nd March, 2024: The progress of each mentee was assessed and feedbacks given accordingly. They were also reminded of the importance of doing well in the Internal Assessment and to take it seriously.

6^th April, 2024: Mentees were prompted to start with the preparation of the End Semester exam if they haven’t already. Any issues brought forward were deliberated upon and necessary action was taken.

4^th May, 2024: Each of the mentees was encouraged to do their very best in the exam which would be starting in a few days time. It was ensured that all of them had the accurate information related to the exam and also the necessary documents.

Student-centric method of learning

19^th October, 2023: Jude the Obscure, a movie was screened for the B.A. 5^th semester Honours students at the Seminar Hall. The movie is an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel Jude the Obscure,which is part of their syllabus.

Every paper taught by the department has a Google Classroom (GCR) and class Whatsapp group. All necessary information related to the teaching-learning process like notices for Assignment and Class-test, are passed on through the Whatsapp group. The activities done in the GCR includes sharing of study materials, taking online classes whenever necessary and also conduct of class test as a part of Internal Assessment. Extension Activity

1^st May, 2024: The faculty members of department of English along with the English Students’ Club of DGC visited Naga New Model (Ao) School, Dimapur as part of extension services. The theme of the programme was “Learning Outreach and Cultural Enrichment”. There was a short programme where the HoD highlighted the purpose of the visit and a member of the Club spoke on Moatsu and aspects of culture. Thereafter, the members of the Club conducted two classes simultaneously. Grammar, storytelling and quiz sessions as well as lively interaction with the school students took place. All together a total of seven faculty members and fifteen students took part in the extension activity.

Report on Study Tour to Shillong, Meghalaya by Students of B.A. 6th Semester English Honours from 29^th January to 1st of February 2024.

Exploring the Enchanting Hills of Shillong- Nestled amidst the verdant hills of Meghalaya lies the enchanting town of Shillong, a place where mist-Kissed landscapes and vibrant culture converge to create an unforgettable experience.

We left Dimapur on 29th January at 5:00 pm and reached Shillong station at 5:00 am. As the sun rose over the rolling hills, we found ourselves captivated by the beauty of Shillong. After a refreshing breakfast on our way to “Seven Sisters falls” and “Mawsmai Cave” at Sohra which is 25 Kms/ 2-3hrs away from Shillong, our first stop was the majestic ‘Seven Sisters falls’ where the waters danced amidst lush greenery. The sight was truly mesmerizing and we couldn’t resist the urge to capture the moment with our camera.

Our next stop was Mawsmai Cave, a nature wonder steeped in mystery and wonder. As we entered the cavernous mouth of the cave, we were immediately enveloped in darkness, our senses heightened by the cool, damp air and the echoes of our footsteps reverberating off the walls. Guided by the faint glow of our flash lights, we navigated the labyrinthine passages of the cave, marvelling at the intricate limestone formations that adorned its walls and Ceilings. With each twist and turn, we found ourselves immersed in a world unlike any other, where time seemed to stand still and the boundaries between reality and fantasy blurred. As we emerged from the depths of Mawsmai Cave, blinking in the bright sunlight, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the sheer beauty and magnificence of the natural world. Right after the Mawsmai Cave, we came across a place where we got the opportunity to wear Khasi traditional outfits. The feeling was simply awesome! It was not just clothing but also a reflection of cultural identity and values.

Right around the corner, there was a local market, so we did some shopping. It was dusk already, therefore, we headed towards our guesthouse but eventually we stopped at Police Bazaar for some shopping and to enjoy the night life in Shillong.

On the second day, our initial plan was to spend in Dawki the whole day, but we changed our plan and decided to visit some nearby places on our way to Dawki.

No journey to Shillong would be complete without venturing into the heart of Meghalaya ‘s lush landscapes, where nature’s marvels await. We embarked on a trek to discover the living root bridges that weave through the verdant hills like veins of life. As we descended into the valley, the sounds of rushing water and the chorus of birdsong enveloped us, signalling our approach to this natural wonder. Upon reaching the destination, we were greeted by a sight that defied imagination: a bridge not constructed of steel or stone, but of living breathing roots. Each step felt like a journey through time, as if we were walking in the footsteps of generations past that had relied on the living marvel for safe passage.

The living root bridge was more than just a feat of engineering; it was a living, breathing testament to the resilience and adaptability of life itself.

Next, we headed towards Mawlynnong hailed as the cleanest village in Asia. Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Meghalaya, this idyllic village beckoned with promises of pristine surroundings and sustainable living.

As we arrived in Mawlynnong, we were greeted by a scene of unparalleled cleanliness and orderliness. The streets were spotless with neatly swept pathways and lush greenery adorning every corner. Recycling bins were strategically placed throughout the village, showcasing the community’s dedication to waste management and sustainability. We visited two of the stunning tree houses, which were quite scary but all went well and the cherry on the cake was that some of us witnessed a Khasi wedding, which was a great experience.

Finally with the sun casting its golden rays over the rolling hills of Shillong, we embarked on the journey to Dawki, a hidden gem nestled on the border of India and Bangladesh renowned for its crystal-clear waters and breathtaking scenery. Dawki promised an escape into nature’s embrace.

As our journey unfolded, the landscape transformed before my eyes, giving way to lush forests and winding rivers that seemed to stretch into infinity. Boarding a traditional boat, we embarked on a leisurely cruise along the tranquil waters of the Umngot river, marvelling in the ethereal beauty that surrounded us. One of the highlights of any visit to Dawki was the opportunity to witness the famed Dawki Bridge, a suspension bridge that spans the Umngot river and connects India with Bangladesh. As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves reluctant to leave the tranquil haven of Dawki behind. The crystal-clear waters and serene beauty of this enchanting destination had left an indelible mark on my soul, reminding me of the profound connection between humanity and the natural world. As we bid farewell to Dawki and returned to Shillong, we carried with us memories that would last a lifetime, a testament to the timeless allure of Mother nature’s wonders.

While returning it was our last night in Shillong, therefore we spent some time exploring the town’s bustling markets and vibrant neighbourhoods, from the lively bazaars filled with local handicrafts and souvenirs to the quaint cafes serving aromatic Khasi Cuisine, every corner of Shillong exuded charm and character.

The next day, we wake up early and headed to visit the Don Bosco Museum, where we delved into the history and heritage of the indigenous communities of North east India. The museum’s interactive exhibits and informative displays provided invaluable insights into the region’s diverse cultural landscape. One thing we regret is that we were not able to visit NEHU due to time constraints.

As we bid farewell to Shillong, we couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible journey we had embarked upon. From the awe-inspiring landscapes to the warm hospitality of its people, from the sleepless bus journey, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Shillong had left an indelible mark on our hearts! As I write this report after the experience, I experience a flow of memories, making me miss Shillong. As we boarded our flight home, I knew that this would not be my last visit to this magical corner of the world. Shillong had cast its spell on me and I was already counting down to the days until I could return.
