About the Department

The Department of Sociology at Dimapur Government College was established in the year 2016. Since then, the Department has grown manifold. The Department offers courses at the Undergraduate level under the aegis of the Nagaland University guidelines. At its inception as a department, Sociology was offered as an elective paper, and Sociology as an Honours degree was introduced in 2020. From the academic year of 2023, the Department is offering the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, intending to provide a more holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to quality higher education.

With an aim to encourage academic excellence among students, the Department has initiated the ‘Subject Topper Award’ in the year 2023. Since then, the award is presented to the student securing the highest CGPA in Sociology honours during graduation.

Currently, the Department has a strength of 5 faculty members. All faculty members equally participate in academic programs, administrative work, and extension services through a system of consultation and teamwork. Apart from regular teaching and mentoring students, all the teachers are constantly engaged in activities of various committees in the college.
