The Department of History, DGC, conducted an Inter-departmental seminar on the topic   “Nagas in Museums: (Mis)Presentation and Re-presentation of Naga Culture” on the 15th of September, 2018 in the Seminar Room of the college. 

The seminar was chaired by Ningshijungla, Assistant Professor, department of History. 

Three faculty members from the department shared a sequence of audio-visual presentations along with the reading of their papers.

Meripeni Ngully, Associate Professor in History, started the presentation by showing slides of different museums in Nagaland and outside. The placement of material objects of culture in the museums and their merits and demerits were highlighted. The various ways in which museums really represented or misrepresented Naga culture was discussed.

Asenla T. Longkumer, Assistant Professor in History, continued the presentation by elaborating on Naga textiles like shawls and body clothes showcased in museums and their importance in depicting the social status of the wearers.

Neisenuo Apon, Assistant Professor in History, concluded the presentation by highlighting the importance of pottery and the various types of pottery made by different Naga tribes, with special emphasis on pottery made in Tsumenyu village and Changki village.

This was followed by a lively discussion. 

Lily Rino, Assistant Professor in History gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the department.
