One-Day Photography Workshop: “The Art of Capturing: Artistic Visions, Captured Moments”
Dimapur Government College (DGC) hosted a One-Day Photography Workshop on the theme, “The Art of Capturing: Artistic Visions, Captured Moments” on 22nd September, 2026 at the Seminar Hall, DGC. The program was organized by the Photography Club in collaboration with Skill Development Committee and sponsored by IQAC, DGC. A total of 49 students, alongside several esteemed professors, attended the workshop to honour their creative skills.
The program commenced with Miss Tsujen P (B.A. 5th Semester, Department of English) serving as the chairperson. Following the opening remarks, Ms. N. Sentinungla Pongen, Vice Principal of DGC, delivered the welcome address. She warmly welcomed the resource person and encouraged the students to seize the opportunity to learn, expressing her enthusiasm and looking forward to seeing skilled photographers emerge from among the student body. A special presentation was then made to honor the resource person, Mr. Mongsen Phom, Wedding and Landscape Photographer.
Address by the Resource Person
Expressing his gratitude to God and the college for the opportunity, Mr. Phom introduced himself and shared his journey, noting his milestone pursuit of reaching 1,000 wedding photo shoots during the current year if conditions permit. He emphasized a core philosophy: photography is not merely about taking pictures, but about how you perceive the world differently and present that unique perspective back to the world.
Key Insights and Technical Tips Shared:
- Diverse Market Scopes: Beyond weddings, he explored commercial avenues such as food product, fashion, journalism, and travel photography. Sharing his personal experience, he mentioned selling two landscape photographs that were subsequently published in two international calendars.
- Equipment vs. Fundamentals: Highlighting that success does not require expensive tools, he stressed mastering the core fundamentals: light, composition, perspective, storytelling, and framing.
- The Magic of Light: He described light as the core magic of photography, urging students to study and master both natural and artificial lighting.
- Developing Personal Style: He challenged attendees to cultivate a distinct style and answer a critical question: Why should people choose you apart from others?
- The Business Side of Photography: Framing photography as a business, he stressed the importance of good communication skills, humility, and pricing work according to what one can offer.
- Creativity Over tools: He reinforced that the camera is merely a tool, while creativity is the product.
- Initiative and Growth: Urging students to start small, leverage social media, and avoid waiting for others to hand them jobs, he emphasized the vital habit of learning and shooting every day.
To put these lessons into practice, the resource person issued a 30-day challenge: participants are to click pictures of anything daily, select the best 5 at the end of the challenge, and critically analyse the areas requiring improvement.
He concluded his session with a powerful call to action: do not wait for the perfect camera, the right opportunity, or until graduation—start creating with what you have right now.
Interactive and Concluding Sessions
Following a photo session and light refreshments, an engaging Interactive Session took place. Professors and students posed various questions regarding technique and industry challenges, which the resource person addressed thoroughly to clear their doubts.
The event concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks delivered by Mr. Mhao N. Yanthan (B.A. 5th Semester, Department of English). He expressed deep appreciation to everyone involved, the organizing committees, and particularly the resource person and the professors for their valuable time and for making the workshop an immense success.
