The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of Dimapur Government College (DGC) has continued to play a vital role in strengthening the relationship between the institution, its students, and their parents/guardians. This report highlights the key initiatives, activities, and contributions made by the PTA during the academic year 2023-2024, from June 2023 to May 2024.
The PTA has worked closely with the college administration to support quality education, infrastructure development, student welfare, and skill enhancement programs, as well as to address concerns raised by parents for the betterment of student learning and well-being.
2. Key Activities and Initiatives
a. Parent-Teacher Meet (16th September 2023):
A major initiative of the PTA this year was the Parent-Teacher Meet held on 16th September 2023, where the Four-Year Undergraduate Program (FYUP) introduced by Nagaland University under the National Education Policy (NEP) was explained to parents. The meeting, chaired by Ms. Ningshijungla Longchar (Convenor, PTA), featured presentations from the Principal, the Vice-Principal, and other faculty members, providing a comprehensive overview of the new curriculum structure, assessment systems, and the college’s vision for holistic education.
Key highlights from the meet:
Introduction to FYUP: Parents were informed about the flexibility of the new program, which offers multiple entry and exit points.
Infrastructure and Facilities: Parents were briefed on the college’s various academic, extra-curricular, and skill enhancement programs.
Feedback and Suggestions: Parents were encouraged to provide feedback, leading to the decision to organize a Graduation Day and the formation of a Mental Health Committee in response to growing concerns about student well-being.
b. Graduation Day Proposal:
In a follow-up meeting with parents on 19th September 2023, the Graduation Day proposal was reiterated by parent representatives. It was suggested that a formal graduation ceremony, similar to other institutions, be introduced at DGC. Parents expressed their willingness to sponsor graduation gowns for the ceremony. Subsequently, it was agreed that Graduation Day would be observed on College Foundation Day (25th July 2024), which was formally confirmed by the college administration. Ms. Khelito Yeptho, the PTA Representative, was given the task of purchasing the graduation gowns.
c. Parent-Teacher Feedback: 21st May 2024
The PTA conducted regular feedback sessions throughout the year to gather suggestions and concerns from parents. Some of the key areas of feedback included:
Improvement in Infrastructure: Parents raised concerns about insufficient fans and comfortable seating in classrooms. This feedback led the college to take steps towards addressing these issues and advocating for better facilities.
Vocational Training Programs: Parents expressed appreciation for the introduction of vocational skill training programs aimed at enhancing students’ employability.
Mental Health Support: Concerns were raised regarding the mental health of students, prompting the college to form a dedicated Mental Health Committee.
Student Discipline and Attendance: The PTA emphasized the importance of regular attendance and adherence to the uniform policy to maintain discipline within the college.
d. Increased Engagement with Alumni and Parents:
Based on feedback from the Alumni Survey 2023-2024, there was a suggestion to conduct more Parent-Teacher meetings to foster better communication between parents, teachers, and the college administration. This feedback led to increased efforts to hold periodic meetings and consultations throughout the year.
e. Skill Development and Employability Focus:
The PTA, in collaboration with the college administration, actively supported initiatives to improve student employability. This included:
The introduction of soft skills development programs and career counseling workshops.
The establishment of placement drives and internship opportunities, particularly in collaboration with local industries and businesses.
3. Infrastructural Development and Support
a. Infrastructure Concerns and Advocacy:
A major area of concern raised by parents during the year was the insufficient infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of students. PTA members advocated for improvements in classroom facilities, including better seating arrangements and increased ventilation (fans). Parents were encouraged to lobby with the government for additional funding for infrastructure upgrades.
b. Library and Learning Resources: The PTA also supported the college’s efforts to improve access to learning resources. This included the expansion of the library’s collection and the incorporation of more digital resources for students.
5. Plans for the Upcoming Year (2024-2025)
Looking forward, the PTA has identified several key areas for continued improvement in the next academic year:
a. Continued Collaboration for Graduation Day:
The PTA will continue working closely with the college administration to organize a successful Graduation Day on 25th July 2024, which will be held as part of the College Foundation Day celebrations.
b. Expanded Skill Development Programs:
There will be a continued focus on vocational training, career counseling, and internship opportunities to further enhance the employability of students.
c. Infrastructure Improvement:
The PTA plans to advocate more strongly for improved infrastructure and facilities, including the construction of additional classrooms and better sanitation facilities, to cater to the increasing number of students.
d. Mental Health and Well-being Initiatives:
In response to the growing concern over student mental health, the PTA will continue to support the college’s efforts to promote mental health awareness and establish more support systems for students.
