REPORT ON INTER-DEPARTMENTAL SEMINAR CONDUCTED BY DEPARTMENTS OF COMMERCE & POLITICAL SCIENCE, DIMAPUR GOVT COLLEGE

A seminar was jointly organised by the departments of Commerce and Political Science at Dimapur Govt College in the Seminar Room at 10.00 am, 10th August, 2018.

The speakers were Mr. E. Lichumthung Kikon, Assistant Professor of the department of Commerce and Dr. Maongsangba, Associate Professor of the department of Political Science.

The program was chaired by Ms Alemla Imsong, Associate Professor and
HoD, department of Political Science with the audience comprising of the principal,  vice-principal and faculty of the college.

The first speaker Mr. E. Lichumthung Kikon spoke on the topic, “Awareness of the basics of GST” where he discussed at length the pros and cons of the new tax regime under GST and how it affects all levels of production and consumption of various goods and services in India.

The second speaker, Dr. Maongsangba spoke on the topic “AFSPA 1958”. Calling the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act a blot on Indian democracy, he highlighted that the Act can be misused by security forces to suppress and even kill innocent civilians on the slightest pretext.  Calling AFSPA incompatible with the fundamental right to live granted to all citizens of India, he reiterated that the Act has become “a symbol of oppression, an object of hate and an instrument of discrimination and high-handedness”, and called for the removal of this lawless law to maintain India’s democratic ethos.

Both papers generated much interest and a lively discussion followed with the audience putting forward queries and citing instances supplementing the speakers.

The session ended with a vote of thanks from Mr. M. Angami, Assistant Professor and HoD, department of Commerce.

Light refreshment was served.
