Report on Study Tour to Shillong, Meghalaya by Students of BA 6th Semester English Honours from 11th – 15th of April 2022

Twenty three students of BA 6th Semester English Honours undertook a Study Tour to Shillong, Meghalaya from 11th to 15th of April 2022. The tour was led by a faculty member and an alumna of the department.

We left Dimapur on 11th April at 4:00 pm and reached Nagaland House, Shillong at 4:30 am. On the first Day i.e on 12th, we visited Don Bosco Museum where we witnessed the rich cultural lifestyles of the people of North East India displayed through their art and sculptures. After the museum, we headed to NEHU campus and explored the campus, the important sections and buildings of NEHU.

On the second day, we set out to “Seven Sisters Falls” & “Mawsmai cave” at Sohra which is 25 kms/2-3 hrs away from Shillong. We was totally amazed by the unique beauty of the rocks hanging like bee hives. A planned visit to Seven Sisters Falls was unfulfilled as we could not see the view of the falls due to very thick fog blanketing the entire scene. We had to visit another waterfall which was a few kms away. The waterfall, named “Lyknsiar waterfall” was worth visiting. We spent a few hours there capturing pictures and had fun with our friends. On our way back, we met some local Kongs (Khasi women) with whom we had an interaction about their culture and lifestyle. They offered us corn and kwaI (offering kwai is a gesture of goodwill among the Khasis).

On the 3rd day, we visited “Wards Lake” where we met new people from various places and enjoyed the boat rides. Later, we went to Police Bazaar to check out some souvenirs.  The fourth day being Good Friday, we conducted a short program with a prayer, songs and some sharing. The program was a blessing as we all got to know each other better through the sharing experience. It was also the day for us to get back home, and everyone proceeded to pack with a heavy heart. At around 3.00 pm we left Nagaland House. We finally bid farewell to Shillong at 5:30 pm and reached Dimapur at 4:30 am on the 16th.

Besides all the fun and good food, the best part of the trip was getting to see the people, customs and places that are mentioned in our current paper on North East writings.
